Child Asking For A Reptile? 2 Types You Can Choose From

If your child wants a pet reptile, you will soon find there are many different types. Below is information about two types to help you get started on your journey of finding the right reptile for your child.

Leopard Gecko

A leopard gecko is a lizard and is a gentle reptile. If your child learns how to properly hold this reptile, they are ones that like to be held. You can find these reptiles in a variety of colors, and they look unique with their spotted features.

A leopard gecko will live up to around 10 years old if taken care of properly. However, the gecko that you purchase could live much longer than this. Most geckos prefer to be alone but if you have a female gecko and want more than one, females may get along with each other.

If you have one gecko a tank that is at least 8 to 10 gallons, which is a good size. This will give the gecko plenty of space to roam around. The gecko loves to eat insects like cockroaches and crickets, as well as worms, like waxworms, super worms, and mealworms. There is food that is specially made for geckos, so you know they are getting the right nutrients. Ask the store employee at the pet store where you purchase your gecko what you need to purchase to get everything set up for them once you bring them home.

Bearded Dragon

Your child may also like the bearded dragon, which is friendly, docile, and calm. This reptile also likes to be held and you will notice they have a big personality that demands attention from their owners. Bearded dragons can live to be over 10 years old if taken care of properly.

Purchase a 20-gallon tank for your bearded dragon in the beginning. As it grows you will need to purchase a larger tank to accommodate them. They need to have enough space so they can move around well. Purchase the largest tank that you can afford as this will make your breaded dragon happy.

Bearded dragons eat insects, such as roaches and crickets, and they will also eat vegetables and mixed fruit. Give them hornworms and waxworms as a special treat. Like geckos, you can find food specially made for bearded dragons at a pet store.

About Me

Managing Pet's Expectations

When you have a pet, you really do get to know their personality. While I never thought too terribly much about what my pet wanted, I realized really early on that if I uttered the word "park," my animal would expect a visit to the local playground. I started thinking carefully about how to manage my pet's expectations, and while it was difficult, we learned together how to make things better than ever before. I started being more careful about what I said and when, and it really paid off. Find out more about how to help your animal live a happier life on this blog.
